Announcing Eons of War

Published on October 01, 2018 by Vasily Vasinov

I’m pretty pumped to finally announce something that I’ve been working on for the past few months!

Early 2018 was a confusing time when I wasn’t sure what to focus on in terms of work. I got disillusioned in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space and nothing seemed interesting enough to pursue.

It got so bad that I started to do things from one of those self-help “how to re-discover your passion” blogs. I wrote a list of things that always seemed interesting to me but I never had a chance to work on. Some of them were outside of tech, which was terrifying since it meant a career change. One of the things that I kept coming back to was game development.

As a teenager, I loved playing computer games. Heroes of Might and Magic, Half-Life, Warcraft, Baldur’s Gate, and a few others were my major influences. Games were a very important part of the adolescent discorse as well as a way to spend time together with my friends (during fierce LAN battles of course ).

At that age my dream was to work on a serious computer game. One of my friends and I made a few attempts at that but ultimately failed because of our general incompetence and a lack of patience.

Years later I became a “serious” software engineer working on distributed systems and SaaS apps. I worked on a couple of mobile games at the beginning of my career as a way to get experience but never pursued it more seriously.

In March 2018 I decided to give myself two months to build a couple of game prototypes and gauge my level of interest and excitement. That was simple enough: I came up with a few game mechanics, fired up Unity, and started prototyping.

May went by and I didn’t want to stop building. By the end of June I was pretty confident that I want to build and publish a computer game. It felt like I got my spark back.

It took me several iterations but I think I discovered an interesting set of game mechanics that will become a fun and deep game. This game—Eons of War—is what I’m officially announcing today.

Eons of War is a turn-based strategy game about advanced civilizations fighting for energy and resources in space. I really wanted to avoid building yet another take on the Civilization series, so Eons is very different from anything you’ve played before.

Every battle in the game takes many millions of years, which means that every time you play you get to experience the cycle of stellar evolution. New stars form and ancient ones go supernova and turn into black holes and white dwarfs. Every star uses reality-inspired physics with mass and luminosity affecting gameplay.

Players can build hyperspace tunnels to other stars re-defining the structure of the battlefield as they develop their civilizations. To collect energy and resources and grow the population players can build mega-structures like Dyson spheres and ring worlds.

As I’m focusing on building and delivering Eons of War by April 2019 I want to be build a real company around it, which is definitely a more challenging endeavor.

It’s going to be a long and grueling journey but I’m super excited about it. Support from friends and anyone interested is invaluable to me. Follow me on Twitter, wishlist the game on Steam, or join the community on Discord. Anything helps! Let me know if I can be helpful in return by supporting your projects, mentoring teams, or providing intros.

I’m not the most consistent blogger but I’m going to try to do my best to post weekly updates about Eons of War and short technical tutorials about solutions to interesting problems that I’ve encountered during development.

That’s all folks!
